Labor Day is This Weekend!

Labor Day

Labor Day is this weekend.

It's considered the last 3 day weekend of summer when many communities hold parades and events, families enjoy get-togethers in parks or backyards, and others take a long weekend trip somewhere fun.

However, beyond the fun and excess this weekend is known for, Labor Day has a specific purpose.

On this day we recognize the American Labor Movement and its many successes that improved the lives of all Americans.  Their efforts gave us the 40-hour work week and overtime pay, safer working conditions and workman's compensation requirements, paid vacation and holiday pay (including for this day), as well as child labor laws, and much, much more.

On this day we also recognize our many working-class families.   We honor the hard work of the many who built this country be they blue-collar, white-collar, or no-collar.  We also thank all those building today and  working hard to keep everything working in our communities.

My Dad

For my family, Labor Day is also something else.  21 years ago on this day, my Father was working as an electrician at General Motors in Linden, New Jersey when he fell to his death. This should never have happened, yet it did, and it serves to show how this work is never done.  While we join gatherings and the like as well, this day includes quieter moments when I remember the great man who raised me and retell some of the best stories about him.  He was an amazing example that I've yet to live up to, but I keep working on it.

However, we choose to celebrate this weekend we can honor American workers by purchasing products for our celebrations that were made by them. We should also be thankful and recognize the many who have to work on this day, be they in uniform or not, to keep our neighborhoods safe and running smoothly.

Happy Labor Day!
